Birth, Family and Education


Sandeep Singh was born in a Jat family of Haryana, which was a middle class family. He completed his studies in his hometown, Shahabad, Kurukshetra. For further studies, Sandeep took admission in Khalsa College located in Patiala, and later obtained a BA degree from Kurukshetra University.


His elder brother Bikramjit Singh has also been a hockey player, and he has also worked for Indian Oil. Vikramjit was a talented drag-flicker, but he had to give up his dreams due to his injuries, but later he trained his brother Sandeep for the game. Sandeep’s brother is presently working as DSP in Haryana Police professionally.

Sandeep Singh knew junior hockey player Harjinder Kaur during his youth. In fact, a few decades ago, the families of both Sandeep and Harjinder came to live in the same village in Pakistan. This was the reason that they both came close and both fell in love. Their relationship was soon accepted. In August 2008, both of them married and after that both of them went to play at the international level. After marriage, Harjinder decides to leave her hockey dreams behind at Sandeep’s request and now takes care of her son, Sehajdeep.


International Career

In January 2004, Sandeep made his international debut during the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Kuala Lumpur. In August of the same year, he made his debut at the Summer Olympics held in Athens, Greece. In 2004 itself, he scored 16 goals in the Junior Asia Cup hockey held in Pakistan and he also became the top scorer in that tournament. He led India to a 5-2 win against Pakistan in the final in this tournament. He scored 2 goals in this match and India got this title for the first time. In 2004, he played for the Champions Trophy held in Lahore, and scored 3 goals. He also scored 3 goals in the next year’s 2005 Champions Trophy in Chennai. He also scored 3 goals during the Indo-Pak Hockey Series in September-October this year.


In 2006, he participated for the Indian hockey team in the Commonwealth Games held in Melbourne. In this he scored 7 goals, with which he became the top scorer of this tournament. In June this year, he again scored 3 goals during the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup held in Kuala Lumpur.

22 August 2006 It was a dark day for the Indian team as well as a great hockey player, Sandeep Singh. That day he was traveling in Shatabdi Express with his friend Major Singh. Actually he was going to join the national team to take part in the World Cup to be held in Germany. Then suddenly by his friend Major SinghA gunshot went straight to his thigh, injuring him badly. This news created panic among the hockey watching audience of the whole country. They were all shocked, because everyone had high hopes from him in the International World Cup Hockey Tournament. This tournament was supposed to take place exactly 2 days after that incident, and they were not able to be a part of this tournament. The bullet damaged his lower reed, liver and kidney, paralyzing the lower part of his body and doctors even said that he could no longer play.


Everyone started feeling that his hockey career was over. Because hockey is a sport where fitness is very important. And it was really challenging for Sandeep to come back from such a deep injury. Due to this, he could not play in the qualifying matches of the Olympics in 2008, and this was also the biggest reason for India not qualifying in the 2008 Olympics. But Sandeep Singh did not give up hope about his dreams and in 2008 he not only made a comeback but also surprised everyone by becoming a hero in the Azlan Shah Tournament 2008 by scoring 8 goals. Along with helping India take the second place, he also received the ‘Top Goal Scorer’ award.


He was made the captain of the Indian national team in 2009, after which he led the team to win the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup for the first time in 13 years. In 2011, he was injured again and was in a dilemma when to play the qualifying matches for the London Olympics. But he helped India to qualify in the 2012 Summer Olympics which was held in London. He scored 5 goals in this match, including his hat-trick. In the final of this qualifying tournament, they played against France and registered their victory 8–1. He dropped out of the Indian national team in 2014, after which he started showing his power in the club hockey league and in India and abroad. In early 2017, he admitted that his age was not in his favor for a national comeback. And then he expressed his desire to take coaching.

The Indian Hockey League was started in the year 2013. Sandeep Singh became the fifth highest paid player of the Mumbai franchise bought by the Mumbai Magicians. They were bought for US$64,400. In this opening tournament, he proved his mettle by scoring 11 goals in 12 appearances and also became the top scorer for the event. In 2014, he signed for English field hockey club, Havent Hockey Club, forcing him to move to the UK. During the 2014–15 league season of Premier Division 1, he scored 24 goals for his team. In this, he became the top scorer for Havent and the third top scorer overall. In 2014 itself, he was bought by Punjab Warriors in the second season of Hockey Indian League. He scored a total of 22 goals while playing with the Punjab Hockey team.


In September 2015, he was bought by Ranchi Race for US$81,000, making him the second highest-bought player in the auction after Akashdeep Singh for US$84,000. He appeared for the team in the 2016 edition of the tournament, but his back injury shattered his HIL dreams. Although he did not participate in the 2017 edition due to personal reasons, he played for St George Randwick Hockey Club in Australia and Harvard Hockey Club in England.
